BREAST AUGMENTATION
Breast implantation is a procedure to enhance the shape and size of the breast. This can be done through various incisions around the nipple, under the breast, in the armpit, or through the umbilicus (belly button). The procedure is typically done to enlarge breasts for cosmetic purposes. Breasts that are of different sizes may also be equalized with an enlargement procedure. Implants are breast-shaped pouches in the shape of a sack, with a silicone outer shell, and filled with either silicone gel or saline (salt water).
DESCRIPTION
Breast enlargement or augmentation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Depending on the individual patient, it may be done under local or general anesthesia.
An incision is typically made through the armpit (axilla), along the fold line under the breast, or around the nipple (areola). These techniques produce the least amount of scarring possible. The operation itself can last up to two hours.
IS BREAST AUGMENTATION RIGHT FOR ME?
The decision to have a breast enlargement is typically based on cosmetic preference. An augmentation may be indicated to equalize the size of markedly uneven breasts, to replace breast volume lost after weight reduction, pregnancy, an injury or medical treatment, or simply as a personal preference for larger or fuller breasts.
Before any decision is made to move forward with surgery, our patients will have a clear understanding of what the new breasts will look like and the final desired result.
RECOVERY
Our patients typically need to limit most activity, such as driving, to about one week after surgery. The sutures are usually removed after 7 to 10 days. Normal activity, including strenuous exercise, can typically be resumed in about three weeks. The scars after surgery will be red for about a month and will fade to a more normal appearance within about a year.
RISKS
The risks associated with this procedure are similar to those risks of any surgical procedure and could include bleeding, unexpected scarring, infection, or reaction to anesthesia.
